When i look at the production log it says my 2 cotton farms only produce 2 cotton but when i look at them in detail they produce more. why is this.

The table on the left presents you with the current production of your company. All goods you are producing are listed here. Seasonal products like fruit, wheat etc. get presented as if they produced a monthly output to make calculation easier for you."
Cotton is a seasonal product.

One level 0 cotton farm, grows 12 per year... so divide by twelve.. production log will for 1.0... so I know you have two cotton farms.
In order to grow enough cotton per year so your fabric factory is always producing, you will need 10, level 0 cotton farms.

And to answer your question directly, the detail view is per year (12 wu) while the production log is per wu.
